I was rummaging through the study today, looking for bits and pieces, when I happened upon an old tattered piece of paper, faded yellow it was so old. I pulled it out, because I had to know what relic someone was keeping hidden. Up the top was a header with a font that is very hard to make out. I think it says “The What”. Anyway, it’s page 3 of a Sutherland Shire Library newsletter of some kind. This page is, specifically, the ‘Children’s News-sheet’, from the December, 1969 edition.
‘Why do we have this?’, I wondered, as I looked it over. Christmas and New Year greetings for the most part. Turning over though, there’s a page called ‘Me, Myself and I’ (on page 2), and there are (very) short ‘tales’ written by, presumably, the kids who sent things into the library to get published. There’s a tale about Lou the cockatoo (“I am a cockatoo”), cornflakes (“Cornflakes”), and Tiny the ant (“A Narrow Escape”).
I draw your attention to “A Narrow Escape”, as it’s the reason we have this 1960’s throwback. It was written by my mother, 9 years old at the time, while she and my grandparents and aunt were living at Grays Point. Eventually they would move to Gymea, but they stayed in the whole ‘Shire’-esque area.
Anyway, I’m thinking about going analytical on the story (it’s only 150 words), typing up a report on it, and then giving it to mum. Just for a laugh I guess. I wonder if she’d appreciate it. I wonder if she’d even appreciate me using words like ‘relic’, ‘old’, and ‘1960’s throwback’ in the same breath I mention her …
Thomas.
