Leaving aside the question of whether the African-American voters would turn out for Obama as VP, I want to take up your point about Gore winning the South.

Perhaps you skimmed my post, which if you did, this comment will serve a purpose. If you were to go back and look at it, you would see that I prefaced any claims that he might win the South with:

Now, I’m not saying that by having Gore leading the ticket then the Democrats automatically win these states - the Democrats just have a better chance in them.

And:

Again, there’s no guarantee that he will carry them in this race should he run with Obama

As well as pointing out:

Actually, we’d rather Gore didn’t exactly follow his state-carrying from 2000 - other than New Mexico, he didn’t win a state South of Illinois and East of California

No where did I make the claim that Gore wins the South, rather, having Gore on the ticket means that the Democrats become more competitive in the South.

I even said this about Tennessee:

Instantly, Tennessee is Democrat favourable - a ‘local boy’ is heading the ticket.

Note the favourable, not me saying he is going to win. If I'm not prepared to say Gore will win his home state, how on Earth can I be prepared to say he will win the South?

I hope this doesn't come off as rude or anything. I'd just like to point all of this out in defense of my post against your criticisms of it. Unless your comment (about laughing at the idea Gore can 'win the South') was a generic criticism of the argument (of having Gore on the ticket) and not leveled at me or my post.

gasdocpol: While we both want to see Obama walk into the White House as president next year, walking in in any capacity is still a bonus.

If Obama wins the most of the delegates but is not the nominee, many, if not most, of the African-American community will feel that the nomination was "stolen" from Barak Obama, and therefore, will stay at home in November. This doesn't matter if Al Gore or Hillary Clinton is the nomination. Nominating Al Gore, a man who did not run and did not receive votes in the primaries and caucuses, will have the appearance of secretative, good ol' boy, male/white power politics. I laugh at the concept of Al Gore "winning the south" because Gore didn't even win his own home state of Tennessee in 2000.
